A SAMOA Airways aircraft veered off the runway while landing at Fitiuta Airport, American Samoa, on Tuesday morning, leaving one passenger injured and prompting an investigation into the incident. The DHC-6 Twin Otter, registration 5W-FAY, was operating charter flight OL990 when it encountered strong crosswinds during its final approach, according to Samoa Airways. Five people were on board the aircraft, including two pilots and three passengers, one of whom was a Samoa Airways staff member. Samoa Airways commended the flight crew for their professionalism and actions in prioritising the safety of everyone on board. “The circumstances surrounding the incident are being assessed in line with standard aviation safety procedures,” the airline said in a statement.
