Sensor network to monitor pollution across Wiltshire
['Michael Ribbeck']
Wiltshire Times | News
The Wiltshire Community Air Network (WCAN), launched by Wiltshire Council, aims to improve understanding of PM2.5 air pollution, which consists of fine particles linked to serious health risks.
Early data from the network, covering October 2025 to March 2026, shows that PM2.5 pollution in Wiltshire is affected by a complex mix of local sources, environmental factors, and pollution from further afield.
PM2.5 can also be transported over long distances from outside the UK, meaning regional and international sources can affect local air quality.
The council said that while low-cost sensors have recognised limitations, the data collected will help inform future air quality strategy.
More information about the project can be found on the Wiltshire Council website under 'Wiltshire Community Air Network.'
