The blaze took hold on Stourbridge Road in Wombourne, Staffordshire, shortly before 3pm on Wednesday (July 29), and affected a large area of land near Himley Hall. Fire engines from Smethwick, Tettenhall, Dudley, Brierley Hill, Stourbridge, Bilston, Bloxwich, and a fire engine from Wombourne station initially responded. A spokesman for West Midlands Fire Service said: "This was a significant fire affecting a large area of grassland near Himley Hall. Three crews from Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service remain in attendance, continuing to damp down grassland. Staffordshire and West Midlands Fire Control took nearly 800 emergency calls between 2pm and 10pm on Wednesday (July 29), which was exceptionally busy.
