In taking her oath of office, Keiko Fujimori included traditional elements, invoked God and the Gospels, and pledged to recognize the importance of the Catholic Church in the nation’s life.
The Peruvian constitution in Article 116 requires the president to take an oath of office but does not specify a particular formula, although some wording is traditional.
“I thank God and place in his hands the work we begin today in the service of Peru,” she stated.
The new president asked God for “wisdom in making decisions, strength to persevere,” and for help “never to forget that power only finds meaning when exercised to serve.”
“There are not two different Perus; there is but one Peru — vibrant, multicultural, strong, and ancient — ready to stand tall,” she declared.
