Sonography is not a Department of Health approved role, however the HSE employs doctors, nurse, radiographers and midwives who provide ultrasound/sonography services to patients. These posts are advertised and filled by HBS Recruit – the national recruitment portal for the HSE and local recruitment in hospitals. Nurses/Midwives and radiographers who are appointed by HBS Recruit as a Nurse/Midwife Sonographer or Radiographer Sonographer must have a post-graduate qualification relevant to the specialisation of sonographer/ultrasound at a minimum of QQI level. The sector say all their sonographers are fully CORU registered and all final study results are reviewed and signed off by IMC specialist-registered Consultant Radiologists.
