When Pittsburgh Pirates reliever Mason Montgomery faced the Arizona Diamondbacks’ Gabriel Moreno in the 10th inning of Monday’s series-opener at PNC Park, both pitcher and hitter brought distinct advantages into the critical at-bat. “You talk about high-leverage, that was huge,” manager Don Kelly said after the Pirates won 3-2 in the bottom of the 10th. “Just from hearing hitters talk, when guys throw harder, it’s hard to not prepare for the fastball,” Montgomery said. After Montgomery struck out Moreno, he intentionally walked Ketel Marte, setting up a two-out, bases-loaded at-bat against Max Kepler. Kepler lined out, and when Lowe produced the winning RBI in the bottom of the 10th, Montgomery earned a win.
