The dangers facing firefighters on Europe’s wildfire frontline were laid bare on Wednesday July 29 after three Greek firefighters lost their lives battling fast-moving blazes fuelled by scorching temperatures and powerful winds.

A third firefighter was killed in a separate blaze in the Peloponnese region of southern Greece.
Several other wildfires broke out across Greece during the day, with authorities deploying hundreds of firefighters, helicopters and water-dropping aircraft to contain the flames.
Although cooler conditions briefly helped firefighters gain control, authorities warned that rising temperatures and stronger winds could cause the blaze to intensify again.
