The delegates-based electoral college system used by political parties in Ghana to elect Presidential or parliamentary candidates has been declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court. The Court in a 5-2 decision ruled that all members of political parties entitled to vote in selecting candidates. The apex court held that the Electoral Commission has the responsibility of ensuring that election held internally should conform to the Constitution. It, therefore, declared that not later than one year from today, political parties must establish a system for selecting presidential and parliamentary candidates that would enable all registered members in good standing, as determined by the party to vote. The three plaintiffs held that the current voting rights for delegates was inconsistent with the Constitution.
