The Minister said the late General understood that leadership demanded sacrifice and placed the interests of the nation above personal considerations. The values of patriotism, discipline, selfless service, integrity, and national unity which General Aguiyi-Ironsi exemplified remain as relevant today as they were 60 years ago.” He described Obasanjo as a detribalised Nigerian whose contributions to national unity and development deserved recognition. He said such a monument would serve as a lasting reminder to present and future generations of the importance of national unity. The ceremony had earlier featured the laying of wreaths at the tomb of the late General Aguiyi-Ironsi in Umuahia by Governor Otti, members of the Aguiyi-Ironsi family and other top government officials.
