Kanu Declines Transfer From Sokoto Prison, Says Wife

The wife of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the imprisoned leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Uchechigeme Okwu-Kanu has clarified that her husband declined to be transferred from Sokoto Correctional Centre to Abuja.
Mrs. Kanu who disclosed this on Wednesday July 29 2026 through her verified Facebook page explained that the development follows an earlier court application in which Kanu sought to be moved from the facility in Sokoto, more than 700 kilometres from Abuja.
Court-appointed Legal Aid counsel had been provided; Kanu thereafter represented himself.
She emphasized that she had consistently advocated for her husband’s transfer from Sokoto since the earliest days of his detention there.
“It was at that point that I was informed that my husband had declined to be moved from Sokoto.
