Data shows that 2022-23 recorded the highest discharge, with nearly 667 TMC ft of water flowing to Tamil Nadu, while 2018-19 witnessed another major release of around 404 TMC ft. However, during 2016, 2017 and 2023, Karnataka released less than the prescribed quantity due to deficient rainfall and poor reservoir storage. "The government could have desilted lakes, strengthened water storage infrastructure and filled tanks whenever surplus water was available. Of its 49.452 TMC ft storage capacity, only 17.126 TMC ft of water is available, with 4.401 TMC ft classified as dead storage. Meanwhile, under the Supreme Court's monthly schedule, Karnataka is required to release 31.24 TMC ft in July and 45.95 TMC ft in August.
