Benton Harbor Area Schools has been awarded a $139,000 grant to improve student literacy. Interim Superintendent Keith Sanders told trustees this week the Michigan Department of Education has approved the district’s application for the Early Literacy Materials Grant, which can be used for intervention literacy materials, professional learning for teachers, and literacy assessments. “As a part of our application, Benton Harbor Area Schools requested funding to support the adoption and implementation of Amplify Core Knowledge Language Arts, the third edition, as our comprehensive elementary literacy curriculum,” Sanders said. “Our proposal also included professional learning and implementation support to ensure our teachers have the resources and training needed for successful classroom implementation.” Among them are St. Joseph Public Schools, receiving $26,000; Coloma Community Schools, receiving $14,000; Berrien Springs Public Schools, receiving $40,000, and Bridgman Public Schools, which is receiving $12,000.
