According to court proceedings, John Payne, of Chesham, Buckinghamshire, was driving a 7.5-tonne lorry on the M3 near Junction 6 when he failed to notice stationary traffic ahead. Their inquiries eventually centred on a mobile phone in the cab of the vehicle. Court documents revealed Payne had been attempting to work out how to use a newly installed mobile phone while driving.
