ACCRA, Ghana – A major fault on Ghana’s national electricity grid has caused widespread power outages across the country, leaving Accra, Kumasi and large parts of northern Ghana without electricity.
Okay News reports that several power generation plants shut down in the early hours of Wednesday after the grid failure.
The state-owned Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) said engineers and system operators were working to restore electricity as quickly as possible while ensuring the safety of the network.
GRIDCo said a technical investigation is underway to determine the cause of the nationwide outage but did not indicate when full power supply would be restored.
Ghana has experienced recurring electricity shortages for years, commonly referred to as “dumsor”, an Akan expression meaning “on and off.”
