ZURICH, Switzerland – FIFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against the Argentine Football Association (AFA) and several Argentina players over a series of alleged misconduct incidents during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, including the display of a banner claiming the Falkland Islands. FIFA said using a sporting event for demonstrations unrelated to football could breach its disciplinary regulations. Separate disciplinary proceedings have also been launched against players following the World Cup final in New Jersey, where Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 after extra time. According to FIFA, Paredes faces three assault-related charges, while Nahuel Molina faces two. FIFA said its disciplinary committee is investigating possible breaches of its code relating to non-sporting demonstrations, team misconduct, discrimination, and order and security at matches.
