GLASGOW, Scotland – Aziz Abdul, the grandson of former Ugandan military ruler Idi Amin, is aiming to make history for Uganda by securing the country’s first Commonwealth Games boxing medal in more than three decades.
Okay News reports that the 25-year-old super-heavyweight boxer will face England’s Damar Thomas in the quarter-finals of the 90kg+ division.
A victory would guarantee Abdul at least a bronze medal, becoming Uganda’s first boxing medallist at the Commonwealth Games since 1990.
The boxer never knew his grandfather, who ruled Uganda from 1971 to 1979 after seizing power in a military coup.
Instead, he hopes his performances at the Commonwealth Games will help establish his own identity and highlight Uganda’s boxing talent on the international stage.
