ABUJA, Nigeria – The Nigerian Army has been recognised as Africa’s Best National Army in Counter-Terrorism Operations for 2025 by African Security Watch, in recognition of its operations against terrorism and violent extremism across the country. The honour was earlier received on behalf of the Nigerian Army by Major General Teriworie Gagariga during the African Security Watch Awards Ceremony held in Banjul, The Gambia. According to the organisers, the Nigerian Army was selected for its sustained counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations, intelligence-led campaigns, coordinated joint missions, civil-military cooperation, and efforts to strengthen force development and capacity building. African Security Watch said these initiatives have significantly weakened terrorist groups while contributing to improved security in Nigeria and the wider region. Receiving the award, Lieutenant General Shaibu described it as recognition of the courage, professionalism and commitment of Nigerian soldiers serving across various theatres of operation.
