Cannington Viaduct, near Uplyme, will open to the public on Saturday, September 19, and Sunday, September 20, giving visitors the opportunity to step onto the structure for the first time since the Axminster to Lyme Regis Railway closed in 1965. The 'Revisit the Viaduct' event will feature guided walks from Uplyme Village Hall to the viaduct, where visitors will be able to access the deck of the historic structure. The viaduct was built as part of the Axminster to Lyme Regis branch line, which served communities between 1903 and 1965. Because access to the viaduct will be carefully managed, places on the guided visits will be limited. Barrie Hedges, secretary of For the Love of a Railway, said: "For more than 60 years Cannington Viaduct has stood as the defining landmark of the Axminster to Lyme Regis Railway, visible to thousands of people yet inaccessible.
