'Police state' fears over new CCTV cameras in seaside town

In total, 39 cameras are being provided in Felixstowe as part of an upgrade to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour, with many welcoming the move for improved safety, while others have voiced concerns over surveillance.

The installation follows consultations with police and Felixstowe Town Council, with West Suffolk Council contracted to monitor, record, and maintain CCTV operations around the clock on behalf of East Suffolk Council.
Felixstowe mayor Darren Aitchison said: "The completion of this CCTV upgrade is a significant achievement for Felixstowe, only made possible through close collaboration.
Sixteen old cameras have been replaced with ultra high definition models, and Felixstowe Town Council contributed £42,000 to the upgrade from its reserves.
