Let’s not allow the strength of today’s election system become the enemy of an even better system tomorrow. It would create a professional pathway into county election offices and prepare graduates to become deputy directors, directors, and senior state election officials. North Carolina must also make a sustained investment in recruiting the next generation of nonpartisan election-season workers. Imagine polished television, streaming, and digital advertisements featuring real North Carolina election workers explaining why they serve. Once new tools are in place, North Carolina should also build a habit of regular operational review.
