The ministry also welcomed the announcement of an informal expanded meeting intended to help restart negotiations on the Cyprus issue under UN auspices and within the agreed framework. Greece said it recognizes, in close cooperation with the Republic of Cyprus, the importance of maintaining the momentum that has developed over the past two years. It reiterated its readiness to contribute constructively to the success of the informal meeting and to support confidence-building initiatives as a necessary step toward resuming talks. Athens reaffirmed that its longstanding objective remains a settlement of the Cyprus issue in accordance with the parameters established by the UN Security Council and the reunification of the island.
