In particular, L.A.'s blockbuster trade for the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, Myles Garrett, only fuels the division's arms race and puts pressure on San Francisco to respond. That's not a problem in 2026, as San Francisco currently leads the NFL with over $71 million in cap space, per Over the Cap. However, in 2027, the 49ers are projected to be $35.1 million over the cap, then over by $20.4 million in 2028. That cap space will have to come from somewhere.
