New buildings at Ulster University’s Magee campus in Derry could end up “sitting there gathering dust” if proposed job cuts go ahead, a trade union leader has warned.
Edward Carlsson Browne, chair of the Magee and Coleraine branch of Unite sounded the warning as he addressed a special sitting of Derry City and Strabane Council to discuss job cuts proposed by the university.
The trade unions are among the latest to warn the target of 10,000 students at Magee by 2032 could be put in jeopardy by the proposed job cuts.
Staff found out in April that Ulster University (UU) intends to axe more than 400 full time equivalent posts across all campuses.
Unite official Carlsson Browne told councillors the job cuts “seriously endangers all the fine words we’ve heard about 10,000 students at Magee”.
