Samsung profit jumps 1,814% as South Korean tech giants benefit from global AI boom

South Korean technology giant Samsung Electronics on Thursday reported a record operating profit of ₩89.5 trillion (€54 billion) for the April-to-June period, up 56% quarter on quarter and more than 19 times the level recorded a year earlier.
Based on Samsung's published rounded figures, the semiconductor business's operating profit rose to ₩89.2 trillion (€53.8 billion), 223 times its year-earlier level of ₩0.4 trillion (€241 million).
Samsung's semiconductor business benefited from rising chip prices driven by demand for AI servers and increased shipments of advanced high-bandwidth memory chips used to power AI applications.
Samsung's quarterly revenue rose 28% quarter on quarter and 130% year on year to ₩171.5 trillion (€103.5 billion), an all-time high.
Samsung Electronics reported its results a day after rival SK Hynix also posted record quarterly revenue and operating profit, as the world's two largest memory chipmakers continue to ride the global artificial intelligence boom.
