The UK Government has awarded a new £5.9 billion contract to BAE Systems to fund critical work progressing the Royal Navy’s Dreadnought Class nuclear deterrent submarines towards entry into service, according to the company.
The four-boat Dreadnought Class will replace the existing Barrow-built Vanguard fleet, maintaining the UK’s Continuous at Sea Deterrent.
“This milestone investment breathes new life into Barrow’s historic traditions and secures our commitment to deliver Dreadnought Class submarines by backing British industry.”
The Dreadnought programme supports approximately 30,000 jobs across the country, with more than 7,000 people currently working on it at BAE Systems alone.
BAE Systems is working alongside central and local government as part of the Team Barrow partnership to deliver improvements via the £200 million Barrow Transformation Fund.
