A lost Pan Am airliner has emerged from the Atlantic after 74 years, revealing the wreck behind a safety change every passenger still sees today.
The Pan Am Clipper Endeavor has been found about 600 meters beneath the Atlantic Ocean, more than 74 years after the passenger aircraft sank off the coast of Puerto Rico.
All 69 people aboard survived the initial emergency landing, but 52 passengers died as the aircraft sank in rough water.
After the accident, the Civil Aeronautics Board, a predecessor of the Federal Aviation Administration, introduced broader requirements for passenger safety briefings and emergency demonstrations.
The wreck preserves physical evidence of both the accident and an important stage in the development of commercial aviation safety.
