Wood shake roofs have long been part of the architectural character of Vail, Beaver Creek, Avon, Edwards and surrounding mountain communities. Many wood roofs installed during earlier periods of development are approaching or exceeding their expected service life. A cedar shake roof may last approximately 30 years, although longevity depends on material quality, installation, exposure and maintenance. Older wood shake roofs can be particularly vulnerable when untreated, weathered or surrounded by combustible debris. The most dependable roofing season in the Vail Valley generally runs from May through September.
