President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced a $22 billion plan to overhaul Washington Dulles International Airport, unveiling a multiyear renovation that would eliminate the airport's long-disliked mobile lounge shuttles and add four new concourses.
Trump made the announcement from the Oval Office, flanked by Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby and Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority CEO Jack Potter.
Duffy said the $22.5 billion cost will be bonded, with the airports authority and the airlines operating out of Dulles — chiefly United, which carries roughly two-thirds of the airport's daily passengers — covering the expense.
Officials cast the Dulles overhaul in similar terms, with Trump describing it as part of an effort to make the nation's capital "safe and beautiful again."
Opened in 1962 and located about 25 miles from downtown Washington, the airport is operated by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority under a 50-year lease approved by Congress, and it also runs Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.
