Media Matters for America
On June 18, one day after the United States and Iran signed an initial agreement to end hostilities and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, the national average price of gasoline fell below $4 per gallon for the first time since March 30.
The decline offered drivers some relief after the Trump administration’s war on Iran pushed the national average to a high of $4.56, but that recovery was temporary.
After bottoming out at $3.79, gas prices began creeping up again on July 8, reaching an average of $4 again on July 20.
Fox News devoted considerably more attention to prices falling below $4 than it did to prices rising again.
From June 18 through June 21, Media Matters found that the network spent 42 minutes covering the decline — nearly three times the 15 minutes it devoted to prices climbing back above $4 during a comparable four-day period from July 20 through July 23.
