DPW’s full statementDPW is responsible for maintaining the City’s stormwater inlets and underground storm drain pipes.
Yesterday’s storm coincided with high tide, which submerged the outlets of storm drain pipes along the harbor.
Many of Baltimore’s storm drain inlets and pipes were installed before 1960, prior to current design standards.
While DPW upgrades infrastructure whenever possible, replacing the entire storm drainage system would cost more than $6 billion.
