Newport City Council candidates are bringing the issue of overtourism into this year's election amid reports from residents and their growing frustration with traffic congestion and housing costs. A recent survey by Discover Newport revealed that only 43% of residents believe the positive impacts of tourism outweigh the negatives. "All over town, it was gridlock," said Beth Cullen, an at-large candidate for City Council, to The Providence Journal. In the Discover Newport survey, only 13% of residents say that local government strikes a balance between visitor satisfaction and resident quality of life. Another $28 goes to Discover Newport for marketing.
