A veterinarian and public health expert in Maiduguri, Dr Phenies Pola, has urged residents to take precautions against dog bites, warning that they remain the leading cause of rabies transmission to humans. “Residents should avoid contact with stray animals and immediately seek medical attention after any dog bite or scratch,” he said. The public health expert also called on community leaders, schools and religious organisations to intensify public awareness campaigns on the dangers of rabies and the importance of prevention. He stressed that eliminating dog-mediated rabies would require coordinated efforts by government agencies, veterinary professionals and members of the public. Pola further advised residents to promptly report animals suspected of having rabies to veterinary authorities to enable early investigation and appropriate control measures.
