(Image: George Munro)In this column I would like to touch on one point: the use, or otherwise, of accident data to determine the rollout of 20mph speed limits locally as part of the national policy. However, I would suggest driving a car in a residential street is inherently capable of causing serious harm. Does the need for lower speed on a residential street emerge just because an accident has happened? Interventions, like the 20mph speed limits, should not be installed piecemeal but in a consistent manner to mitigate the inherent danger. If you don’t favour 20mph speed limits and driving slowly in residential streets, my question is this: what level of danger do you consider acceptable, and are you prepared to justify it when the worst happens?
