The Federal Communications Commission announced this week that it’s adding advanced foreign-made robots, including humanoid robots and four-legged “robot dogs,” to its restricted import list. The decision followed a review from a White House task force, which concluded that robots built overseas could pose a real cybersecurity risk. That kind of incident is exactly what officials say they’re trying to get ahead of before humanoid and four-legged robots become as common in homes and workplaces as vacuum robots already are. Robots already approved and sold in the US aren’t affected, and the ban doesn’t stop the federal government itself from buying or using foreign robots if it chooses to. Robots aren’t the first piece of Chinese-made tech to end up in this position.
