The group of around 50 arrived yesterday night at approximately 9.30pm, and according to witnesses, used power tools to gain entry to Langdon Hills Recreational Ground. A council spokesperson said: "Basildon Council is aware that last night there was forced entry into Langdon Hills Recreation Ground by Travellers who cut off the access padlock and is taking action. (Image: NQ)Kerry Smith, Essex County independent councillor for Westley Heights, said: "I have contacted the Essex Wide County Traveller Unit and raised concerns over the presence of travellers on the Langdon Hills Recreation ground after they arrived last night. "The ground is incredibly dry and if one spark was to fall we could be looking at disastrous results." The Essex County Traveller Unit (ECTU) has been notified and is managing the matter, according to the council.
