Millions of Kenyans could soon be protected from sudden matatu fare hikes if a proposed law to give the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) the power to regulate fares is approved.
Kimilili Member of Parliament Didmus Barasa addressing a rally in Bungoma County on July 27, 2026.
He cited several countries that regulate public transport fares, including Fiji, France and Germany, where governments determine or approve fare structures.
According to Barasa, only Kenya and Uganda lack a structured system for regulating public transport fares, allowing operators to adjust prices at will.
He maintained that fare regulation would help restore order in the matatu industry, curb what he described as cartel-like practices, and strike a balance between protecting commuters and ensuring operators earn reasonable returns.
