Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Renson Ingonga has warned that politicians found sponsoring goons or making inflammatory statements will face criminal charges as the government steps up efforts to curb political violence.
The DPP said the law would apply equally to all leaders, maintaining that his office would not distinguish between politicians from the government or the opposition when enforcing the law.
Nuno urged political leaders to embrace issue-based campaigns and avoid using criminal gangs to intimidate rivals or disrupt public order, warning that security agencies would take firm action against offenders.
The government's renewed focus on political violence follows President William Ruto's directive to security agencies to move decisively against goonism while ensuring enforcement remains within the law.
Further, authorities have in recent weeks intensified operations targeting criminal gangs in several parts of the country, with security agencies maintaining that politically sponsored violence will not be tolerated.
