FERGUS FALLS — Otter Tail County commissioners approved a resolution at the July 28 meeting notifying the state that the county intends to stop using the state auditor for its annual financial audits. State law requires counties to choose either the state auditor or a private firm, and switching requires notice by Aug. 1 of an even-numbered year. The state auditor is currently handling the county's 2025 and 2026 audits. Officials didn't detail reasoning, though counties often cite faster turnaround, cost and scheduling flexibility when choosing a private firm.
