A Wall Street Journal article with the headline: “Are Therapists to Blame for the Rise of Adults Cutting Off Their Parents?”
While the headline is certainly juicy and, no doubt, effective clickbait, there are some inherent problems with the implication that therapists are culpable for a rise in family estrangement.
However, the article also positions therapists as a large part of the issue, claiming that therapists and “estrangement coaches” have been producing a “growing slew of offerings, from quizzes to courses and books, and suggesting that therapists are pushing and perpetuating the narrative of estrangement.
An early labeling of estrangement as a "rising trend" was the result of a podcast episode by Oprah Winfrey, not of therapist-created content.
As a clinical social worker, I am bound by my profession’s code of ethics, which lists the “Importance of Human Relationships” as a core value.
