The Chamber of Deputies has passed a new law governing animal husbandry and fisheries, marking a significant step towards developing a more modern, sustainable, and competitive livestock and fisheries sector. The legislation establishes an updated legal framework to support professional livestock farming, strengthen animal health systems, and improve fisheries management. The law covers key areas, including terrestrial livestock farming, aquaculture, animal health, quality control of non-industrially processed animal products, and the sustainable management of fisheries. Furthermore, the legislation aligns Rwanda’s legal framework with international standards established by the World Organisation for Animal Health, helping to strengthen animal health systems while enhancing the country’s access to regional and international markets for animal products. Overall, the new law provides a stronger foundation for the continued development of Rwanda’s livestock farming and fisheries sector, benefiting farmers, fishers, consumers, and the national economy.
