The hot weather has impaired the use of the traditional lime mortar being used for the repairs to the grade two listed, 260 year old bridge. The work started on June 29 and was expected to be completed by the end of July, even with with the discovery of extra repairs need to the bridge parapet. The highways team, in correspondence to Mid-Craven ward councillor, Simon Myers, says that the heat has 'impaired the use of hot lime mortar at the bridge'. Because the bridge is listed, it has to be repaired with hot lime mortar - a a traditional building material made by mixing un-slaked quicklime, aggregate - such as sand- and water together at the same time. Coniston Bridge and the causeway to the East was grade two listed by Historic England in 1989.
