U.S. Rep. Melanie Stansbury says people should follow the law and respect the land as debate grows over 10,000 acres in the Sandias. Stansbury said the U.S. Forest Service and Sandia Pueblo have co-managed the land under a 2003 agreement while protecting the Pueblo’s cultural rights and access. Some recreation advocates said they worry a transfer could bring more restrictions and less public access. Really the only thing to be gained by the land transfer is restricted access,” said Courtney Bryan. Others said they want the focus to stay on protecting the land while still allowing responsible public access.
