Dennis Santana cleared waivers and elected free agency after he was designated for assignment by the Pirates on Thursday. Santana joined the Pirates as a waiver claim in the 2024 season and quickly established himself as one of the team's better relievers. In a team-high 70 appearances last season, Santana recorded 16 saves and posted a 2.18 ERA. Pittsburgh was counting on Santana to be the primary closer this season but things quickly went awry.
