Commonwealth Bank (CBA) will migrate around 1.5 million customers to a fee-free bank account, following a decision by Australia's competition watchdog. The Big Four bank has refunded a total of $93 million to low-income customers who were found to have been charged excessive bank fees. CBA had argued last year that fee-free accounts should be made available to existing customers on an "opt-in" basis. It had also flagged plans to move eligible customers to a "new nominal fee account". It found CBA and its subsidiary Bankwest charged $270 million in fees to about 2.2 million low-income customers between July 2019 and October 2024, including account-keeping, dishonour and overdraw fees.
