Algonquin-based Community School District 300 will place a referendum on the November election ballot asking voters to consider hundreds of millions of dollars in additional funding to update district facilities.
The total cost of the plan is $442.5 million, with $87 million in district funds and another $355.5 million in bond issuances to cover it.
District 300 is the sixth-largest school district in the state, with 28 schools, more than 20,000 students and about 2,500 staff members.
On average, District 300 schools are about 50 years old, with needed repairs and updates to roofs, windows, electrical, plumbing and heating and cooling systems, according to a District 300 news release.
If voters turn down the borrowing request, District 300 may face other obstacles to address the influx of students.
