BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Heavy rainfall on Wednesday led to partially treated effluent being discharged from Burlington’s wastewater treatment plant, prompting officials to close local beaches.
City officials say the plant is designed to treat and disinfect excess flow, but that a buildup of material in the sewer because of the recent dry weather overwhelmed the facility.
Blanchard Beach, Oakledge Cove, the Blodgett Access Area, the Coast Guard ramp, and Perkins Pier will remain closed until 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
