The 1977 directing gig Martin Scorsese called the worst he’s ever had: “A very, very bad time”As you can tell from his filmography, Martin Scorsese will direct almost anything, but when he ventured into uncharted territory for the first time in 1977, it was a mistake he’d never make again. Shortly after production wrapped on New York, New York in late 1976, Scorsese and Liza Minnelli reunited for a Broadway show. Opening in October 1977, the latter played Michelle Craig, a washed-up movie star attempting to resuscitate her career as a Las Vegas singer. Live theatre wasn’t in the filmmaker’s wheelhouse, and it didn’t take him very long to figure that out. Minnelli thrived, winning a Tony for ‘Best Actress in a Musical’ for her efforts, but Scorsese was floundering, and directing over 200 shows didn’t do his mindset any favours.
