The unfinished 1966 masterwork that Truman Capote left behind: “I’m going to kill it, or it’s going to kill me”Without the words, stylings, and mind of Truman Capote, our modern-day media landscape would look incredibly different, indeed. Miss Golightly could almost be read as an early characterisation (or caricature) of Edie Sedgewick, who Truman Capote went on to become good friends with, but she was actually both inspired by and modelled on Christopher Isherwood’s 1937 character Sally Bowles. Bowles, of course, was later immortalised herself in the 1966 musical Cabaret, and, more famously still, played in the movie adaptation six years later by Liza Minnelli. And he left that legacy, made all that impact and changed the world as he did, without ever even finishing what he considered to be his true masterwork. And so it turned out to be; though Capote confessed to having given up on the project by 1977, other accounts contradict this testimony.
