Why Now Is The Perfect Time To Bring Back The Single-Spoke Steering Wheel
['Matt Nelson']

At one point in time, the single-spoke steering wheel was an amusing sight.
A traditional, 1950s-era steering wheel would have clashed with the forward-thinking look, and the futuristic steering wheel slotted right into the overall motif perfectly.
Because of the slim, single-spoke design, an airbag simply couldn't fit inside, requiring an all-new steering wheel design to accommodate one.
While the large, thin-rimmed steering wheel wouldn't exactly work in today's cars, the concept of having a central, low-mounted spoke leaving the bulk of the steering wheel free to be looked through is a promising one.
Because of this, developing a modern-day single-spoke steering wheel may not be all that difficult for the right automaker.
