U.S. Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) wants to change the fact that the United States relies heavily on foreign countries, including China, for many of the medicines, medical devices, and active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) used every day by American patients. Toward that goal, the senator recently sponsored the Our Nation’s Supply chain for Healthcare has Over Reliance Elsewhere Act (ONSHORE) Manufacturing Act, S. 4994, to provide for credits against tax for domestic manufacturing of critical medical supplies and drugs. “America’s dependence on China and other foreign nations for critical medical supplies is a national security threat that puts the lives of Americans at risk,” Sen. Blackburn said on July 21. The lawmaker on July 15 introduced S. 4994 to expand domestic manufacturing capacity and improve supply chain resilience products. The bill has been endorsed by DeRoyal Industries, Premier Inc., Retractable Technologies, and Securing America’s Medicines and Supply Inc.
